Rubber jobs safe

PA Wellington Rubber workers at The Upper Hutt tyre factory of Dunlop New Zealand, Ltd, have been told their jobs are safe.

The president of the Wellington District Rubber Workers’ Union, Mr John Forsyth, said he had been given an assurance that no jobs would be lost because of the proposed take-over of the company by the Australian Dunlop Olympic organisation.

Mr Forsyth said there had been a lot of concern among 380 rubber workers at the factory that their jobs might be in jeopardy. “Dunlop’s parent company in the United Kingdom has sold out and closed a lot

of its tyre factories, and we were a bit afraid we may be next,” he said. Mr Forsyth and the union’s secretary, Mr Tony Neary, this; week met Dunlop Olympic’s managing director, Mr John Gough, and we were told there would be no jobs lost because of the take-over.

“In retain we had to give some assurances that we would assist in increasing the productivity and efficiency of the plant. We told him we were willing to play our part,” Mr Forsyth said. The managing dirctor of Dunlop New Zealand, Ltd, Mr Bill Evans, is expected to address workers at the plant next week and give details of the proposed takeover.
