Top seeds win golf

PA Wellington Janice Arnold and Brenda Ormsby defied frightful conditions and a wayward first round to take the national ladies’ foursomes golf title at Paraparaumu Beach yesterday. Violent and changing

winds lashed the course throughout the day and, coupled with torrential rain during the morning rounds, made high scoring inevitable.

But Arnold and Ormsby made light of the conditions in the afternoon to card the days’ best round, a one-over par 74, and to take the tournament by a stroke from Kaye Maxwell, of Auckland, and Jane Little, of Rotorua.

The Arnold-Ormsby and Maxwell-Little pairs were seeded first and second for the competition, opposing each other through both rounds.

Arnold and Ormsby, who will spearhead New Zealand’s challenge at the Espirito Santo World Teams’ Championship in Hong Kong later this month, trailed their opponents by six strokes after the first 18 holes. ' The pairs were steady through the first nine holes in the afternoon, with Arnold and Ormsby recording 36 to gather a stroke on

their opponents. But the second-seeded pair collapsed after the turn and, carding an 81, finished a stroke adrift of their opponents.
