Magna Carta sold for $3M
NZPA-AP Dallas One of four copies of the Magna Carta issued in 1297, renewing the original English document acknowledging individuals’ rights, has been bought by a Texas businessman, Ross Perot. Mr Perot paid 5U51.5 (about $3) million for the document, which was issued by Edward I in 1297 and written on animal skin. The head of Electronic Data Systems Corporation, Mr Perot acquired the document from the Brudenell family of Britain which has been keeper of the document since the fourteenth century. “I was interested in it
because it was the document that first gave people individual freedom,” Mr Perot said. Eventually, the document will be placed on permanent display in the rotunda of the National Archives in Washington, D.C., where it will join the United States Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights. Unlike its predecessors, the 1297 Magna Carta became English law, said Decherd Turner, a University of Texas professor and director of the Humanities Research Centre, who arranged the purchase.
