Nuclear weapons policies
Sir,—Some, Opposition commentators are sti&frying to frighten us
with stories about the economic disadvantages New Zealand will suffer as a result of our antinuclear weapons policies. Success in politics is often a matter of taking the expedient line; but, in the present instance, our Government must take a strong moral stance because it is right to do so. The threat to use nuclear weapons (which is implicit in the deterrent policies of the super-Powers) is morally wrong. Most of the members of the United Nations have agreed that nuclear warfare is a “most monstrous crime” against humanity. The Opposition speakers would do well to try to understand what this phrase means. — Yours, etc.,
COLIN BURROWS. September 27, 1984.
