Um ...

Sir, — I take issue with J. V. Ballantyne, (October 1) on the interjection, “um,” and particularly the statement “Not in any dictionary is it to be found.” It can be an annoyance, but I would inform J. V. Ballantyne that on page 1401 of Chambers 20th Century dictionary, 1983 edition, “um” is listed (without quotation marks) as being an interjection and described as expressing hesitation in speech. I suggest that the correspondent takes up Scrabble. It is surprising what one learns. — Yours, etc.,

B. I. GRIMWOOD. October 1, 1984.
