Arms bill passed

NZPA-Reuter Washington

The United States House of Representatives apSved yesterday a SUS 297 ion ($594 billion) defence bill for 1985 after reaching a hard-fought compromise with the President, Mr Ronald Reagan, on military spending. The House approved the measure by voice vote and sent it to the Senate, where it was later passed. The House approved the measure yesterday after negotiators from the House and Senate had resolved more than 1200 disputes between the Chambers. The measure sets broad spending and policy guidelines and technically calls for spending SUS 297 billion in the 1985 financial year, which will begin on October 1.

But the money must be allocated in a companion appropriations bill, which has not yet come before the full House and Senate. Part of the White House-Congres-sional compromise calls for the funds in that measure to be “capped” at $U5292.7 billion. The compromise broke a politically charged two-month deadlock on main defence issues, including America’s new MX missile.
