Festival will be colourful

The badminton courts at Pioneer Stadium have been transformed into a mosaic of colour for Springfestival 84, beginning today. Exhibitors and demonstrators were busy yesterday preparing their exhibits.

The Daffodil Society’s South Island show, part of the three-day festival, has entries from Papatoetoe to Invercargill. It is being being held in conjunction with the World Daffodil Convention, which was held in Hamilton recently.

A number of overseas exhibitors, coming mainly

from the United States, Japan, Australia, and Britain, have come from the Hamilton convention for the South Island show.

Included is a guest judge, Mr Brian Duncan, of Northern Ireland, who is one of the world’s leading daffodil hybridisers. Rows of golden daffodils line the hall, and floral art displays in the centre catch the eye. Created by members of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, the colourful displays, with the theme, “This is. Canterbury,” include a 4m high statue entitled “On Either Side the

River Lie,” and a black-and-red display called “Canterbury Fever.” A trotting sulky and a trailbike decorated with foliage and blooms are part of other displays. Included in the display are orchids, rhododendrons, African violets, herbs, irises, geraniums, bonsai, and a collection of carnivorous plants. The official opening of Springfestival 84 will be by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, at 2 p.m. today. A grand parade will be held tomorrow with the theme, “Early Canterbury.”

It will leave Addington Raceway at 12.30 p.m. for the Pioneer Stadium. Other attractions of the festival include demonstrations of crafts, including china painting, bone carving, pottery, carving, and weaving. “Natural Magic,” a free puppet show for children attending with their parents will be at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. The festival at Pioneer Stadium, in Lyttelton Street, will be held from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. today, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
