Karpov’s bright hopes
NZPA-Reuter Moscow The present world chess champion, Anatoly Karpov, adjourned the sixth game of his title defence against Garri Kasparov yesterday with winning chances after 42 moves. Although each player has only a rook and three pawns, Karpov has a dangerous outside passed pawn that may cost his Soviet rival material. The game itself was the best and most exciting of the matches to
date. Both players showed great ingenuity, Kasparov in attack and Karpov in defence, and experts’ assessments changed with each move. Finally the challenger’s nerve cracked and Karpov seized the advantage in the late part of the game. Some experts claimed Karpov missed a decisive path in his rush to avoid a time forfeit, but he remains in control.
