Q AND A Two mature women, normally well bred and relatively well one from this beautiful Land of the Long White Cloud and the other a Fair English Rose, are wondering if perhaps they may have messed up a computor programme somewhere in the depths of the British tourist system. Their tour through a farflung area of Britain had been enjoyable in the extreme. Each blessed with a sense of humour, they had met, “clicked” straight away, and had become firm friends. At each hotel on the tour a questionaire had delicately been put before them at the closure of the final meal on the final day. The first few had been filled out with an honest endeavour to present their true feelings at the catering abilities of the establishments. But, the final morning of the tour, sad at having to part company, a slight hysteria prevailed. Questionaire presented; pens poised; then brown eyes met blue eyes and the same glint of fun was apparent
in each colour. Will the computer break down at the thought of Doris Day in room 0, and Barbra Streisand in room 2001 of the small hotel? Will it sneeze in dispair when the. information fed in tells it that Staff Pleasantness, General Cleanliness and Food were good and fair and poor? Will the hotel arrival date of 1880 play havoc with the national average? Will it blow a fuse, have a heart attack (do computers have tempers?) when the general remarks — ‘Read a book — hohum, don’t you ever get bored reading all this’ — are fed in? Both the mature women are now back in their separte home towns, in their separate houses, doing their separate housework. But, now and again both mature women pause in their separate daily chores, and the same smile that lights up the glint in the blue eyes, appears in the brown eyes, 12,000 miles away.
