OPENS TO PUBLIC
LEFT: A truck neatly tips rubbish into the pit at the Ruru Road Metro Refuse Station.
The new system is the result of 10 years study and planning by a committee made up of nine representatives from five local councils.
When the search for an ideal rubbish disposal system for Christchurch began, engineers studied methods at work in Australia, Britain, Europe, and the United States.
Although the first refuse station had to be designed and built from scratch, very little had to be changed when plans for the second station were drawn up, said a spokesman for the dis-' posal scheme committee. The large grille doors at Parkhouse Road, for instance, have a wide mesh which allows smaller bits of litter to blow through. Designers of the Bromley station have rectified that by putting in bi-fold doors, similar to those used in fire stations.
These open faster and can be fitted with a smaller mesh that will trap loose litter.
