Reassuring trial for Guineas
By J. J. BOYLE Secured Money wound up his preparation for the Dunedin Guineas with a sound 1000 m sprint on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday. His race rider, Chris Johnson, had the chestnut under a snug hold as he finished in 1:3.6, the last 800 in 502, the final 600 in 37.6. In a lengthy career in training, Barry Taggart has not had a previous Dunedin Guineas runner, but he is quietly confident in Secured Money’s ability to give him an Immediate breakthrough. Pokare, another Riccar-toh-trained Dunedin Guineas hopeful, did not gallop yes-
terday, and much of the remaining interest in Win-gatui-bound hopefuls centred on Ponchielli, an unraced Blue Vermillion gelding. His effort to run 35.8 for 600 on the plough would have attracted attention if he had been a class one sprinter. In fact his race will be the first County Maiden, in which he will be ridden by Craig Edmond. Chiasso, whose next start will be at the New Zealand Cup meeting, went about his work with a will to record 36 for 600 on the grass. His stablemate, Donizetti, went out soon after to hurry over 800 in 48.8, the last 600 in 36.4. John Bourne plans to
race him at the second Geraldine spring meeting. A two-year-old Schweppeshire Lad gelding in the Thistoll team showed much of the sharpness of his brilliant sire to return 35.6 for 600.
Brackets, one of the reserves for the first County Maiden at Wingatui, ran in from the 800 in 51.4, the last 600 in 38. He failed in the corresponding event on the first day of the Otago meet-
Pelion and an AlvaroJuneau filly finished 600 on terms in 40.4.
Pelion is a Palatable-She-zan filly in Mavis Harris’s team.
