Goats come in from Tasmania

Four dozen Angora goats have arrived in New Zealand, the first since the lifting of a three-and-a-half year ban on goat imports. The animals, from Tasmania, are all in good condition, and will remain in quarantine at Silverstream until Mid-October then be delivered to destinations throughout New Zealand. The ban on goats was imposed in 1981 because of the risk of caprine arthritis encephalitis (C.A.E.) infection. C.A.E., a virus which can lame and kill goats, is frequent in Australia and has been identified in some New Zealand herds, said Mr Tony Keay, an M.A.F. veterinarian in Wellington. The ban has been lifted on the condition that stringent testing programmes are done and only accredited C.A.E. free herds are imported. The import of Angora goats is part of a move towards farming diversification, and several hundred more are expected to arrive from different parts of Australia next year. Cashmere goats are also expected to be crossing the Tasmrfn in the next year.
