Socred bill on boats and caravans

By

PATRICIA HERBERT

in Wellington

Social Credit intends’ to introduce a private member’s bill exempting boats and caravans from sales tax which will almost certainly embarrass the Government The member for Pakuranga, Mr Neil Morrison, had the bill on the Order Paper for introduction yesterday but asked that it be postponed to Friday so that debate might be resumed on the anti-nuclear bill promoted by the party’s deputy leader, Mr Garry Knapp. Mr Morrison has a big marina in his electorate but the measure seems intended to focus attention on Labour’s pre-election pledge to review the sales tax on the items in question. The Leader of the Opposition, Sir Robert Muldoon, has accused the Government of backing down on this promise. The accusation was made after the Minster of Customs, Mrs Shields, said that no immediate action could be taken on the matter.
