Large ski-ing entry
Officials will have a hectic time at Mount Hutt today when the annual Canterbury inter-secondary schools’ ski race is held with a hefty entry of 184 skiers. The entry is made up from 46 teams of four from 36 schools, including such southern schools as Twizel High School, Waitaki Boys’ High School, and Fairlie High School. Several teams include both boys and girls.
For the teams’ events the fastest three times count for the totals. Individual prizes will also be presented. This year’s organising school is Rangi Ruru, which is being assisted by St Andrew’s College. The school officials arrange the hand timing and do the considerable calculations required while the Mount Hutt race department will set the courses and provide
electronic timing. Among the leading Canterbury ski-racers who will be taking part are Juliet Satterthwaite (Rangi Ruru), Stefan Crawford (Christchurch Boys’ High School), and Nils Coberger (Christ’s College), all members of the New Zealand B squad; and Rachel Scott (Rangi Ruru), Bergendy Cooke (Rangiora High School), Adele Coberger (Christchurch Girls’
High School), Juliet Johnston (Burnside High School), Karl Burtscher junior and William Hunt (both Christ’s College) are all members of the national development squad.
Last year’s event had to be cancelled for the first time in its history because of bad weather and for the 1984 event there are two contingency days, tomorrow and Friday.
