$lO,OOO prize for flight
PA Auckland Air Albatross has offered $lO,OOO to the first person to fly a human-powered aircraft across the upper Waitemata Harbour. The first contender to complete the 6km course will also receive the StarAir Albatross Trophy, offered by the joint promoter, the ‘‘Auckland Star” newspaper. The course is across the upper harbour between Hobsonville Peninsula and the Meola Reef Reserve and contenders can attempt it in either direction.
A young Californian, Bryan Allen, achieved a similar feat five years ago when he pedalled the Gossamer Albatross 35km across the English Channel. The sponsors said they expected Mr Allen’s flight to be emulated here, but it would probably take time.
The machine used in the competition must be built in Australia or New Zealand and the flights must take place between January 1 and the end of the third week in May, beginning next year.
