Thief who saw the light
Staff at the Small Gallery in Shades Shopping Precinct have the Lord to thank for the return of an original paper sculpture stolen four months ago. The sculpture, “Welcome to Bureaucracy,” by an American artist, Siegbert Reinhard, was secretly returned to the gallery about 10 a.m. yesterday. Staff discovered the work
wrapped in a suspicious brown parcel, tucked under a shelf in the corner of the shop. ' A typewritten note attached to the sculpture identified the culprit as simply “The thief.” Also enclosed in the parcel was a plain brown envelope containing 640. The note, signed by “The thief,” said that the money
was to pay for an etching by J. Bonard which had gone missing from the gallery three years ago. The etching, depicting a field with a tree in the background, bad a retail price of $37.50, but had been sold by “The thief’ for $4O. “The Lord has punished me for my crime. May I
apologise for taking these artworks from the shop ... Please excuse me for the troubles I may have caused by the dishonest act ... I have received the Lord into my life. Praise God!” the note said.
The sculpture, which was priced at $475 when it was stolen, is expected to be back on the shop’s shelf for sale next week.
