Request to meet conciliator

PA Wellington The Nationalist Workers’ Party has sought a meeting with the Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Hiwi Tauroa.

The Wellington branch of the “whites' rights" group sent Mr Tauroa a telegram yesterday asking him to travel to Wellington to meet it The party spokesman, Mr Bastian Zandbergen, said that in view of recent events and Mr Tauroa’s publicly expressed desire to have powers added to the ■Race Relations Act the party felt it was important that he should meet it

The party wanted to discuss race relations with Mr Tauroa and get guidelines for literature being distri-

buted by the party. “We have asked for guidelines in the past but Mr Tauroa has been uncooperative. However, he has previously expressed a de- : sire to meet us and we feel now is the time,” he said.

Nationalist Workers’ Party literature has been criticised recently by groups which have branded it racist and designed to stir racial hatred.

Mr Zandbegen denied yesterday that the party was out to stir racial tension. “We want to discuss the situation with the Race Relations Conciliator because we feel that the Race Relations Act is already tough enough and we don’t want to see it given any more power,” he said.
