Man assaulted in hamburger bar

PA Dannevirke A man who assaulted a deaf hamburger bar customer because he would not stop singing has been convicted and fined $lOO and ordered to do 60 hours community service. Grant Tawhiti, aged 30, a supervisor, of Dannevirke, had pleaded guilty to the assault charge on September 6 and was sentenced by Judge Toomey in the District Court at Dannevirke

yesterday. The Court heard that Tawhiti had walked into the hamburger bar and found the complainant, Neville

Peck, who wears a hearing aid, inside singing. Tawhiti told him to stop but Mr Peck appeared not to hear and continued. Tawhiti then attacked him, throwing him to the ground, and punched him four times in the head. Mr Peck was concussed, his face and upper body were badly bruised, he required stitches to the eyes, and his hearing aid was broken. The Judge warned

Tawhiti that if he committed another assault he would almost certainly be jailed. Part of the fine was to be paid to Mr Peck.
