Poets will ‘battle’

Poets of all talents will soon have the chance to air their verse regularly in Christchurch.

Every fourth Tuesday, starting next week, the Arts Centre Tavern will become the arena for the “Battle of the Bards.” In spite of its title,' the event will not be competitive but an opportunity for inexperienced and established poets to try their works in public. The organiser, Mr Ged Maybury, said he hoped the event would establish poetry as an acceptable form of entertainment. It would be an alternative to the bands in hotels and he hoped it would improve the image of poetry. Most “battles” would feature three poets and two open forums. The first “battle,” on September 25, will feature Wendy Wingfield and Colin Munn. The starting time is 8 p.m.
