Rebel Royale picked
Special correspondent Wellington
New Zealand prospects of bringing home the Melbourne Cup continue to look bright after Kiwi’s grand run at Hastings during the week and Rebel Royale, one of a big New Zealand contingent with Melbourne aspirations, could get the major prize in the Motorcorp Handicap, the first leg of the Marton Jockey Club’s T.A.B. at Awapuni double today. Rebel Royale has had only a handful of runs over
ground, but his second behind Manchu at Hastings in the Trailways last Saturday was a fine effort and he looks the form runner.
Exocet, still in across the Tasman, was a last-start winner at Feilding and his chances look good. So do those of Rose and Thistle, despite the top weight. He ran a bold race for a long way at Hastings. Passive Prince will be looking to improve on his Hastings effort while New Zealand Cup winner, Payee, the intriguing La Grigia,
and Suttle Knight, are among the other possible Australian contenders. Mr Trick, Saddlelight and Gold King are among the
stay-at-homes which look in good form, while the South Island mare, Jendra, will be an interesting runner. A strong field has been drawn together for the second leg, the Honda Metric Mile. Options look to be wide open, headed by Under the Clock, Yale, Always Summer, Bridge Player, El Valiente, Flying Tui, Guiness and Nomusa.
