PA Whangarei AH Maree (D. Cleland) knuckled over on leaving the starting stalls in the Beaumaris Highweight at the Whangarei Racing Club’s meeting yesterday, dislodging her rider. Cleland was stood on by a horse, and after an examination by the club’s doctor was found to have bruising to her back.
Cleland will have to produce a medical clearance before she rides again at a race meeting. The favourite for the Avondale Challenge Cup, Diament Noir (G. Stewart), broke down shortly after entering the front straight and was eased down by his rider who dismounted. Diament Noir was examined by the veterinary surgeon, who found the horse had an injury to his left shoulder. In the Beauzami Maiden, the apprentice jockey, G. Edmonds, rider of Storm Girl, was struck in the eye .by an object about 250 m from, the finish. Edmonds was examined by the' doctor and was stood down from further engagements on the day.
