Andes Saga
Keepers of the House. By Lisa St ■ Aubin de Teran. Penguin, 1984. 183 pp. $9.95 (paperback).
It is a pleasure to read such a beautifully crafted and absorbing first novel. Lisa St Aubin de Teran’s story of the saga of the Beltran family, rulers of the desolate valley in the Andes that they first occupied in the eighteenth century, is told in a straightforward yet evocative style that catches the reader’s interest from the beginning. In a decaying mansion in a valley stricken by a succession of misfortunes, the last of the Beltran family tries in vain to preserve the way of life of his people. His wife will be the only one remaining to record the tragic history of the Beltrans, and Benito, their faithful old family servant, tells it to her. The tale Lydia preserves and recounts is a gripping and moving one, authentic in detail and colour. The author is a master of her craft, and a born story-teller.—Agnes-Mary Brooke.
