Record broken

A member of the Christchurch Model Aero Club, Mr Colin Duthie, of Christchurch, with the radio-con-trolled aircraft with which he broke a 29-year-old national flight duration record. Mr Duthie’s aircraft reached an altitude of about 150 metres in its flight of shr 49min 8s at the club’s Charing Cross circuit. The previous record was 3hr 28min. This was Mr Duthie’s third attempt to break the record, but only the first

with his 3.3 m wingspan model, Grotty Weather 3, which is powered by a 6.6 cu cm Japanese four-stroke engine. About 2.7 litres of fuel made up of methanol, castor oil, and nitro-meth-ane was used.
