Freightmail has earned Methven Cup favouritism

Freightman’s splendid run for fourth behind Roydon Glen at Addington Raceway last Friday will result in his starting favourite for the Methven Trotting Club’s Methven Cup tomorrow.

Freightman’s run was by no means as disappointing as his placing might suggest as he was slow away and forced very wide as he tried to improve from the 700 m. His time for the 2600 m was 3min 20.75, the same as that credited to Roydon Glen. Freightman, a son of Lordship, appeals as a stayer of tremendous potential. He is thoroughly seasoned, having had four starts this spring, a factor which should be to his advantage on the testing country course with its long uphill home straight. Twelve months ago the Templeton trainer, Cecil Devine, caused a boilover when he produced his own mare, Capri, to win this event. He will have a great chance of winning again with Mighty Me as his big hope. Mighty Me will appreciate the drop in class to that he encountered at Addington in his two starts this season.

Mighty Me finished fourth behind Norton on September 8 and last Friday he was sixth behind Supreme Ruler over 2000 m. Those two runs should have improved him and even from 30m he cannot be left out

Richina and Soxygen will be popular, at least as place chances. Richina has two thirds to her credit for her three races starts this season, while Soxygen had a win and a second from two starts at the national meeting. Both should run out the 3200 m quite comfortably. Best Dream could be as good as any of the others, but he will not be able to race as fiercely as he has at times if he is to master the distance. Much interest will centre on the performance of the 1984 Auckland Cup winner, Enterprise, the backmarker on 40m*.'He will be having his first start since April and should he be forward enough, he could well figure in the finish. Last year he finished second, narrowly beaten after starting from 30m. Holy Mackerel, Regal Mate and Armorel form a likely trio in an extremely open field in the second leg, the S. G. Holmes Memorial Handicap.
