Coach works on attitude
PA Wellington The coach of the New Zealand women’s squash team, Norm Coe, has been trying to instil a positive attitude into his side for the second test against Australia in Wellington this evening. Mr Coe was elated with the form of his No. 1, Susan Devoy, who beat her rival, Vicki Cardwell, in straight games in the first test in Dunedin.
For the last couple of days, Mr Coe has been boosting the confidence of his No. 2 and No. 3, Robyn Blackwood and Joanne Williams, respectively, both of whom lost in Dunedin, which allowed the visitors to take the test, 2-1.
Mr Coe admitted yesterday that Blackwood hit a low and could only play
better in the second test of the Honda City-sponsored series.
“These girls are fit. It’s more a question of ensuring that they go on to the court with the right attitude,” said Mr Coe.
“They know what is required; it’s a case of me reminding thpm.” Blackwood said yesterday that she was confident of improving against the visiting No. 2, Jan Miller, after her depressing, 2-9, 2-9, 0-9 loss in Dunedin.
Devoy described her first test win over Cardwell as “a bit of a shock,” and expects to have a furious encounter this evening before a full gallery. Cardwell is an unashamed admirer of Devoy’s skills but she still hates to lose.
Thejhird test is in Hamilton on** Sunday night.
