N.Z dart throwers win Pacific Cup
PA Nelson Lillian Bird, of Nelson, won two gold medals to help New Zealand win the Pacific Cup at an international darts meeting in Hawaii at the week-end. New Zealand team of Bird, Jan Karena (Wellington) Rob Furmage (Hamilton) and Gordon Allpress (Christchurch) finished narrowly ahead of Canada and the United States.
Other countries competing in finishing order were Singapore, Australia, Japan, Papua New Guinea and Taiwan.
Bird partnered Karena in the women’s pairs competition to win New Zealand’s, first gold ahead of Australia and Canada. She went on to win the women’s singles event. The United States finished second and Karena completed New
Zealand’s fine showing to take the bronze.
With New Zealand collecting five bronze medals, it was Bird’s winning singles performance that gave New Zealand its narrow over-all victory.
New Zealand won bronze medals in the teams event behind the United States and Canada. Allpress and Bird combined for bronze in the mixed pairs competition.
The men won two bronze medals, with Furmage third in the singles behind Singapore and Australia, and Furmage and Allpress finishing behind Canada and Australia in the pairs..
