Chase ends escape
A Paparua Prison escaper is back in custody after a police chase through the streets and backyards of Linwood yesterday morning. Kevin James Lane, aged 22, who had been missing from Paparua Prison since June, will appear in the District Court today charged with escaping from the prison. Other charges, relating to offences he is alleged to have committed while at large, are expected to be laid.
Detectives yesterday morning searched houses in which they believe Lane had stayed since escaping. They recovered what they believe to be stolen property valued at $30,000.
The police were driving to one of the houses when they were passed by Lane, who was, driving a stolen car with false registration plates. After a chase through several streets Lane turned into the driver way of a Linwood house and drove into a vegetable garden.
He fled on foot, scaling fences on the way, but was caught in a nearby property. Earlier, the police apprehended another prison escaper in Linwood. Hawrawe John Tengo Snowden, aged 23, had escaped while working with a fencing gang at Paparua Prison village on Monday afternoon. He appeared in the District Court yesterday charged with escaping, converting a car, and stealing a radio. Three other Paparua escapers are still at large. They are Mark Richard Whittaker, aged 24, who is considered dangerous and should not be approached, Richie, Stuart Clutterbuck, aged 20, and Steven Allan Shaw, also aged 20.
