Exercise worries C.N.D.

PA Wellington The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament says it is not reassured by the

statement by the Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn , that American fighter jets taking part in the Triad ’B4 exercise next month will not carry nuclear weapons while in New Zealand. Ms Maire Leadbeater, of the C.N.D., said in a statement the point was that the fighter jets were designed to play a crucial role in a future nuclear war. “The Flss and Fl6s are fast accurate interceptor bombers designed to limit the damage to the United States in time of war. The airborne warning and control plane coming here for the exercise is especially hardened to resist the effects of nuclear blast and is equipped to control a nuclear war from the air should ground stations be destroyed,” she said. “In New Zealand in 1984 the war game is conventional, but it is a rehearsal for a war some place else. “Such aggressive exercises lead to increasing international tension,” she said.
