Simpson progresses

NZPA-AP Los Angeles Russell Simpson of New Zealand, beat a qualifier, Eric Rosenfeld, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 yesterday in the first round of the $255,000 Pacific Southwest Open tennis tournament. Simpson will meet the seventh seed Tim Mayotte, of the United States, in the second round.

Wally Masur, of Australia, lost the first set but rallied to defeat Tim Wilkison, of the United States, in two tie-breakers in the longest match of the day. Taking two hours and 25 minutes, Masur downed Wilkison, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 to advance to the second round where he will play the ninth seed, John Sadri, of the United States.
