Locust plagues predicted
NZPA-AAP Sydney Locust plagues, equalling Australia’s worst of 1953-55, are expected to hit New South Wales farms next summer, state authorities have said.
The largest infected areas will be in the Riverina, in south-west New South Wales, with an extension into South Australia, they said.
There are enough locusts in southern Queensland and in the central west of New South Wales to produce a serious outbreak if there is
enough rain for summer breeding, they said. The Australian Locust Plague Commission has set up 10 control bases to combat the threat of interstate locust migration, a state Primary Industry spokesman said.
Swarms were likely to occur in the Riverina from mid-November to late December, he said. “State Departments of Agriculture and the commission have made carefully co-ordinated plans to combat the plague threat,” the spokesman said.
