Values fluctuate for most prime sheep classes

Bigger yardings contributed to a slight easing in the price of prime shorn old ewes and prime lambs at the Addington market yesterday. However, prices for woolly old ewes were steady. > The prime sheep yarding was boosted by large numbers of dry ewes. Beef cattle again sold strongly. In the store sheep section, prices for ewes with lambs at foot eased and a small yarding of in-lamb ewes attracted keen interest. Prime lambs A bigger yarding than last week and reduced competition from freezing companies led to a drop of about $1 in the price of light and medium lambs. Heavy butchers’ quality lambs generally sold steadily, the best reaching $33. Spring lambs made from $2O to $2B and the top quality lambs reached $3O. Prime cattle Good quality beef continued to sell strongly in the prime cattle market, particularly heavy steers. Several sales exceeded $lOOO — L. A. Barnett, Takaka, sold two Simmental steers at $1222 and $lOlB, and Pinegrove Partnership, Broomfield, received $ll5O for an excellent quality Friesian. Apart from a handful of plain cattle, the quality of the yarding was good, most cattle benefiting from a mild winter. Freezing company buyers provided strong buying power for all types. The yarding was 304 compared with 242 last week. A Simmental cross heifer from Glenalla Farm, Irwell, made $720, and Hereford cows from O. J. and J. J. Brownlee, Te Pirita, sold to $7lO. Prime steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 225 c and 230 c a kilogram; from 220 kg to 270 kg, 225 c and 230 c, and over 270 kg, to 235 c. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to $9lB, with odd sales to $1222.

L - Store sheep Prices for ewes with lambs at foot eased slightly from the high levels of recent weeks. The market for shorn and light ewes started $2 below last week’s rates, but slowly improved during the sale and finished only about $1 down. Top woolly ewes with lambs sold to $17.60 (all counted) and ewes with a reasonable fleece of wool generally made between $l4 and $l6. Shorn ewes sold down to about $l2. . Good quality porkers sold well also, but poor quality pigs were about $5 cheaper than last week’s prices. Choppers were fully firm and few good cutting pigs made less than $l3O. Values were:— Light pork, $95 to $lO5. Medium to heavy pork, $lOB to $l2O. Light to medium bacon, $125 to $142. Heavy bacon, to $l6O. Light choppers, $l3O to $l6O. Heavy choppers, $lBO to $2OB. Store pigs A small yarding of store pigs attracted little outside buying power and values were steady for most of the sale. Demand fell away near the end, particularly for small pigs. Prices for large stores showed little change. In the breeding stock section, unmated gilts sold to $255.' Values were:— ’ Small weaners, $3O to $4O. Large weaners, $42 to $47.
