Hearse driver ‘did the ton’

NZPA-AAP London The police were stunned when they clocked a driver, John Maule, travelling at 163 km/h (101 m/h) in a hearse carrying a corpse. The “Sun” newspaper reports that Mr Maule lost his licence and his job because of his heavy foot. Mr Maule appealed against his sacking. ’He told an industrial tribunal that he was speeding only because the funeral directors told him to do a 4501 cm round trip, to collect the body, in five hours. “When I glanced at the

speed I wasn’t going that fast,” said Mr Maule, of Newcastle. But his employer, Raymond Harrison, told the tribunal that Mr Maule had been fined for speeding before and had been warned by the company. Mr Harrison said that when Mr Maule was caught a second time he did not tell the company. “I saw a television news item about it,” said Mr Harrison. “I was absolutely stunned.” The tribunal dismissed Mr Maule’s claim.
