Two die, seven injured in crash
Two persons were killed and seven were injured when two cars collided at the turnoff to Burnham Military Camp on State highway 1, about 32km south of Christchurch, yesterday morning. Those killed were Colin Thomas Raymond Counsel!, aged 54, of 63 Dunford Street, Rakaia; and Kim Butler, aged 17, of 224 Hendersons Road, Christchurch. . The accident occurred about 10.30 a.m. Four ambulances were required to take the seven injured people to hospital. Marlon Joseph Pokere and Colin John Cottam were reported in a serious condition in Christchurch Hospital last evening, while Anita Haslett was admitted with moderate injuries. Lorna Evelyn Counsell, Allison Counsell, and Maxine Butler were all admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital with moderate injuries. Sheryl Valda Counsell was admitted but later discharged. Altogether 11 people were killed on New Zealand roads at the week-end.
A youth died when the car he was driving crashed into a Point Chevalier, Auckland, shop early yesterday morning. He was Raymond Joseph Cameron, aged 16, of Green Bay. A passenger, aged 16, was taken to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries. A motor-cyclist was killed in a collision with a car and trailer on State highway 1, near Bombay, south of Auckland, at 3.15 p.m. on Saturday. He was Gavin Charlton, aged 18, of Palmerston North.

The driver of the motorcycle, Michael Gerard Coveney, aged 24, was in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital’s intensive-care unit with chest injuries. Two youths were killed early yesterday morning when they were run down by a stolen car as they walked along the edge of the Porirua motorway north of Wellington They were Reece Warren Seymour, aged 17; and Wilson Brian Faint, aged 18, both of Porirua.
The police have not been able to locate the driver of the car, stolen half an hour earlier. They said the two youths were apparently walking beside the motorway at 2.50 a.m. The stolen car was believed to have failed to take a bend, hitting the two men as it ran along the verge before veering across the road and coming to rest up a steep bank. The car then quickly drove off. A young woman died early on Saturday when the car in which she was a passenger hit a parked truck in Wellington. She was Anneliease Resch, aged 17, of Titahi Bay.
Her younger sister, Margit, was listed as fairly comfortable by Wellington Hospital.
A man died instantly when the car in which he . was a passenger hit a power pole on the main road between Rotorua and Taupo on Friday evening. He was Alan Seaman, aged 21, of Rotorua. The driver was not injured in the accident. A pillion passenger was killed on Saturday morning when a motor-cycle left the road at Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland. He was Selwyn Ivan Hadfield, aged 25, of Glenfield, North Shore.
