NZPA-AAP Port Moresby Villages around the Mount Ulawun volcano on Papua New Guinea’s New Britain Island have been evacuated as ash and lava are thrown from the crater. Authorities have declared a stage three or “orange” alert with an eruption from

the 2300 m cone-shaped volcano expected within days to weeks. Government officials said volcanologists reported a steady build up of seismic activity at Mount Ulawun. The people of Nuau Village, 7km from the volcano, had been moved to safer ground.
