Scouting sex admitted
NZPA-AP Chesapeake, Virginia A former leader of a handicapped boy-scout troop has pleaded guilty to 31 charges involving sexually abusing and taking pornographic pictures of young boys. Arthur W. Humphries, aged 69, of Chesapeake, entered his plea before Circuit Judge William Hodges. He will be sentenced on November 1.
Humphries pleaded guilty to 22 counts of sodomy, 11 of which carry a maximum life term, 10 of which carry
a maximum five-year term and one which carries a maximum three-year term. He admitted nine charges of manufacturing child pornography, which carries a maximum 55-year term. The assistant Commonwealth attorney, Ken Taft, said that between 1972 and 1984 Humphries had engaged in sodomy and taken pornographic pictures of 20 boys, ranging in age from eight to 15. Several of the victims were boy scouts and some had handicaps and learning disabilities.
Humphries was arrested in May on 12 sodomy and pornography charges involving three boy scouts, and the later charges were handed up by a grand jury, Mr Taft said.
Humphries, who has been in custody since his arrest, was a scout leader-.-and adviser for more than 30 years before his troop disbanded in March. He received two meritorious service citations L- one from former President Gerald Ford and the other from President Reagan, the police said. ' j 1
