‘Red Flag’ sung at conference

PA Wellington The socialist anthem, the “Red Flag,” was sung lustily at the Labour Party conference yesterday, but not by everybody. Napier’s member of Parliament, Mr Geoff Braybrooke, refused to stand and would not sing when other delegates rose to be led in the song by members of the Labour Youth. The Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, sang along, as did the retiring president, Mr Jim Anderton.

But the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, did not join in the singing. “In a way I’m sorry Mick Connelly (the former Yaldhurst member of Parliament) wasn’t here, because he nearly had a heart attack the last time (we sang it),” Mr Anderton said.

"It was sung at my first conference and at my last as president. I am very pleased it. was sung.”
