China wins in Singapore

NZPA-Reuter Singapore The favourites, China, won the 10-nation Merlion Cup men’s basketball championship in Singapore on Saturday evening, coming from behind to beat Madrid Estudiantes, of Spain, 71-70, in a nail-biting finish. China, Asia’s flag-bearers at the Los Angeles Olympics, started off nervously and trailed the Spaniards 32-39 at half-time, before rallying with a strong finish.

Estudiantes, who pat on a skilful display in the first half, especially the American import, David Rossel, crumbled when the revitalised Chinese side a.ppted more aggressive tactics.

The Chinese quickened the pace with strong defensive play by Sen Fengwu and rapid counter-attacks by Wang Libin, who alone got 22 points. With 48 seconds of the game left, the Spaniards fought back to 70-71, but the Chinese regained possession and held on until the final whistle.

Results: First and second place: China 71, Spain Estudiantes 70. Third and fourth place: Georgia 82, Canberra Cannons 73. Fifth and sixth place: Southern Utah State College 70, Malaysia 68. Seventh and eight place: New Zealand 80, Bank of Korea 58. Ninth and tenth place: Japan 76, Singapore 72.
