Triumph for coach

The Rangers coach, Bill McDonald, was “elated” with his team’s qualification for the Rothmans Soccer League play-off series yesterday. For Mr McDonald, it was a personal triumph in his first year as coach of the club’s first team. Yet he did not feel he was under particular pressure to succeed, after the outstanding work of his predecessors, lan Marshall and John Souter.

“I didn’t have any reputation to lose,” he said. Mr

McDonald praised the achievements of Messrs Marshall and Souter, and then pointed across the dressing room to his players and said “they deserve the praise. They know what it’s all about.” Mr McDonald felt the turning point came when Rangers went ahead, 2-1, early in the second half. “When we scored the second we knew we could take them, even though we did go to sleep and let them get level,” he

said. In the other championship match, North End United had its first win, beating Roslyn-Wakari, 2-1, in Dunedin. Steve McGregor and John Wilkinson, with a penalty, scored for North End, while Ross Gamer scored Roslyn’s goal, also from the penalty spot. HERTZ CHAMPIONSHIP
