Veterans break record
The Olympic veteran men’s No. 1 team broke their record in the annual Takahe to Akaroa running relay held in fine, mild conditions on Saturday.
The team comprised R. Kuprecht, B. Buras, N. Reid, J. D. Macdonald, J. K. Macdonald, A Cook, D. Neill and R. Stevens. Their time was 4hrs 29mins Is, compara! with the old record of 4:3526. Reid set a new record on lap three of 33.55 for the 10.1 km, beating the 1982 record of Brian Atkins (United) of 33:17.
New Brighton No. 1 won the A grade section of the relay after a slow start but none of the team broke a lap record. The only senior men’s lap record to fall was on lap four of 9.lkm, which Timaru’s Chris Tobin took with a time of 26:34. The old record of 27:25 was set by Tony Good (Olympic) in 1982.
Colleen McKenzie (Olympic) took the veteran women's record for lap one (9.6 km with a time of 39:43. The old record of 42:27 was held by her team-mate C. Reid.
Margaret Walker (Christchurch), running in the club’s women’s No. 1 team broke the veteran women’s lap record on lap five (11.1 km with a time of '39:19.
The second fastest woman on lap five was none other than the New Zealand road champion, Ann-Marie Tweedie (University). Walker’s brilliant lap helped her team to a memorable second placing behind University No. 1. Lynn Epps (New Brighton) broke the veteran women’s lap record on lap six (6.9 km the gruelling uphill lap, with a time of 34.47. The old record was 36:02 set by her last year. The only other record to fall was on lap seven, known as a downhill lap, but containing several uphill sections. Rowan Hocking (Christchurch) recorded 33:55 for the 9.5 km to beat Michelle Jewell’s record set last year by just one second. Jewell ran on lap three for New Brighton this year and took second fastest time. New Brighton women’s No. 1 team was without its top runners and this left the way open for a comfortable win to University women’s No. 1, led by Mary O’Connor, just back from Los Angeles. O’Connor ran lap two (10.3 km in 37:13. Results.— Teams A grade men: New Brighton 1,4 hrs 7mins 555, 1; Olympic 1, 4:1124, 2; Christchurch 1,
