Pulau Bidong
Sir, — There are close associations between New Zealand and the pathetic situation?of refugees bn the island of Pulau Bidohg, Malaysia, reported by Robert Mahoney (no relation to the writer) in “The Press” (September 5). Many Vietnamese now settled-in•, New Zealand came from the island, and since 1980, the New Zealand Red Cross Society has provided a nurse to assist with the medical care of the refugees. Currently, Miss Pam O’Neill, a Christchurch nurse, is serving there. She is funded by the New Zealand Red Cross Society, but is working under the banner of the League of Red Cross Societies which, since 1978, has maintained an international medical team on the island. The New Zealand society would accept gratefully, donations in support of this important, but financially demanding task. — Yours, etc., J. R. MAHONEY, Secretary-manager, North Canterbury Centre, N.Z. Red Cross Society (Inc.). September 6, 1984.
