Aust. market closes firmer

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer yesterday as investors responded to positive news from abroad. The all-ordinaries index was 4.0 points higher at 725.0. National turnover was about 32M shares worth ?Aust34.BM with rises just outstripping falls. The- market leader, BHP, finished 5c up at 10.30 its new shares rose 10c to 10.10 and CSR gained 2c to 3.15. Brokers said investors were encouraged by the improved Wall Street market, higher New York bullion prices and gains in some base metals in London.

Kidston Gold Mines, the newly listed issue, advanced

a further 13c to 2.05, taking it 45c above its issue price, and elsewhere on the metals and golds boards Aberfoyle jumped 8c to 9.10, Central Norseman 10c to 4.70, Bougainville 5c to 1.75, and MIM and Western Mining 6c to 2.80 and 3.10 respectively. However, GMK dropped 40c to 6.60 in a delayed reaction to disappointing results announced Wednesday and Comalco fell 5c to 220.

In the oil and gas sector, Santos advanced 8c to 6.98, its contributing shares 5c to 4.75, its new shares 10c to 6.90, Crusader 5c to 2.45, Woodside 4c to 1.27 and Weeks 3c to 59c. AOD firmed 1c to 98c on speculation that Santos may increase its bid for the company by 10c to 1.00. Coles dropped 10c to 3.85 after Thursday’s announcement it will buy Katies the women’s fashion wear merchant.

On the media boards, Fairfax jumped 20c to a record 6.80 but insurance issues, FAI dropped 10c to 6.10 and MLC gained 100 c to 23.00.

Adelaide Steamship advanced 20c to 5.20, Castlemain Tooheys 10c to 4.50, but Rothmans lost 10c at 9.30 and Philip Morris 6c at 6.40. The banks were generally firmer. ANZ gained 2c to 4.78 but Westpac dropped 2c to 373.0.
