NZPA-AAP Port Moresby . South Pacific nations setting policy on nucleararmed ships should also consider that the region relied on the United States for security, Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister,
Mr Michael Somare, has said. In a clear reference to New Zealand’s ban on nucler ships, Mr Somare said, “If you ban the Americansifrom coming, who is goin&to stand to defend you? '
“In the Pacific we rely on the Americans, and I speak for Papua New Guinea with very limited resources.”
Mr Somare said, however, that his Government stood firm against nuclear testing and dumping in the Pacific.'
