Favourite defeated in women’s badminton

PA Auckland The second seed, Linda Persson (North Shore) yesterday won the national women’s badminton singles title on Saturday, beating the favourite, Toni Whittaker, of Auckland, 11-4, 116, in the final. Graeme Robson, of Auckland, won his third consecutive men’s singles title in the Yonex-sponsored national championships, beating the top seed and North Island champion, Phil Horne (North Shore), 15-6, 15-4.

Whittaker, a finalist for the fourth time, said later that she had experienced pressure in the past “but it had not been from oppon-

ents, but rather people’s expectation of my winning.”

Persson deserved her win, capitalising on her opponent’s nervousness. “I am not fast on court but I have strength and I used it,” said Persson. “I just kept hitting to the back of the court and kept Toni away from the net where she is extremely dangerous.”

Robson’s third title puts him on a par with the former Australian and New Zealand titleholder, Ross Livingston, the last to win three times in succession.

“I have not played as well since what I consider my best efforts in the world championships,” said Rob-

son, whose record against Horne now stands at three wins each for the season. He countered the attacking play of Home with touch play from the net. Results.— Open men’s singles: G.
