Meat report
PA Wellington Trade for all meats in Britain last week was slow because of continuing hot weather and a short trading week because of Bank Holiday. Sales of New Zealand lamb were down on the week’s target, but for the year so far, sales are on target. The domestic lamb market is still in a state of flux, live values declining by 3p per lb on the previous week and expected to drop further. This was being reflected in ex-hook values which were also down on last week. On the Smithfield market, New Zealand PL grade is being quoted at 67-67.8 p per lb -
(JNZ3.BB-3.93 per kg). Prices for imported manufacturing beef in the United States firmed slightly last week. However, domestic prices were lower towards the end of the week and demand was flat, probably because of the Labour Day long week-end. Both New Zealand boneless cow beef and bull beef were up on average by half a cent per lb c.i.f. at 98 US cents ($4.31 per kg) and 108.5 US cents ($4.77 per kg). The weekly meat report, usually printed on these pages on Saturday, could not be obtained by the Press Association from the Meat Board on Friday evening.
