Maoris beat Hawke’s Bay from solid forward moves
NZPA Hastings Scoring five tries to one in wet, slippery conditions, the New Zealand Maoris comfortably beat Hawke’s Bay, 25-18, at Nelson Park on Satur-
da ?he All Black wings, Kawhena Woodman (North Auckland) and Mike Clamp (Wellington) scored three of the Maoris five tries, which were well constructed from a solid forward performance.
New Zealand Maoris led, 149, at half-time. • New Zealand Maoris 25: K. Woodham (2), M. Clamp, H. Muru, W. McLean tries; McLean, penalty goal and conversion.
Hawke’s Bay 18: K. Taylor, try, D. Kirby, 4 penalty goals and a conversion. 0 Southland beat South Canterbury, 6-3, in a South Island second division match at Timaru.
Neither side managed. to gain a decisive advantage in a match which was full of errors, and the points scored came from penalty
Southland 6: Eric Todd, two penalty goals. South Canterbury 3: Barry Fairbrother, penalty goal. 0 Wanganui retained its commanding position in the North Island second division rugby championship by beating the competition tail-ender, Poverty Bay, 40-15, at Gisborne.
Wanganui was too fast and too creative for Poverty Bay and ran in six tries to two, the speedy wing, Tasi Su’a scoring Poverty Bay was disappointing and in disarray in the first 40 minutes,- when ’ Wanganui put. 21 points on the board. Wanganui’s captain and halfback, the All Black, Andrew Donald, took fine ball from the scrum and gave clear instructions to his back-line.

conversions, penalty goal. 0 Taranaki scored nine tries in beating Horowhenua, 48-9, in a North Island second division championship match at New Plymouth. Taranaki’s win keeps it unbeaten in the competition, the team having also beaten Poverty Bay and East Coast in the last fortnight Taranaki was clearly superior and should have won by a bigger margin, but basic errors crept into its game. Taranaki 48: Alan Crowley, Charlie McAlister, Merv Dudley (2), Murray 1 Watts, Colin Cooper, Kieran Crowley,’ Warren Bunn, Dwight Murfitt tries; Keera Crowley, 6 conversions.
Horowhenua 9: Kevin Shields, try, Brendan. O’Neill, conversion, penalty goal. ® King Country had a convincing win, 45-4, over Thames Valley in a North Island second division championship match at Otorohanga.
Thames Valley failed to feature in the first half and the King Country forwards and backs ran through the defence at will. The second half was
very scrappy, both sides making a lot of errors although Thames Valley lifted its game and was able to dispute forward possession.

Otago led, 9-4 at half-time and increased its advantage to 15-4 early in the second half. Mid-Canterbury attacked strongly in the last quarter but could not breach a solid defence.

Sydney under 18 teams, won by Otago, 15-10.
The play of both teams was marred by bad handling but Otago’s forwards maintained a territorial advantage for most of the match.

® Saturday’s main match at Carisbrook was won by the touring Auckland secondary schools team which beat South Island schools, 19-10. Sione ‘ Levula, the Auckland prop, scored two hard-driving tries to bring his total to six tries in five matches. Wayne Holmes, who kicked two conversions and a penalty goal, and loane Tusa made many strong runs. Auckland secondary schools 19: S. Levula (2), A. Autagavia, tries; W.
