Liberian Speaker arrested
NZPA-Reuter Monrovia The Speaker of Liberia’s interim National Assembly, Major General Nicholas Podier, has been detained in connection with a plot to overthrow the Government, the Justice Ministry has announced. General Podier was named by a former Justice Minister, Mr Isaac Nyeplu, who surrendered to police last week and spoke about the plot on television.
He said that General Podier had told him that three men now under arrest, a university professor, Amos Sawyer, and Messrs Jerry Friday and Larry Borteh, had visited his house and wanted him to join in the plot to overthrow the head of State, Samuel Doe. Protests against the arrests led to violent demonstrations at Monrovia University last week.
General Podier was the deputy head of State before the interim assembly was set up. He is considered a senior member of the ruling people’s Redemption Council.
