Glue-sniffing problem

Westport reporter Glue sniffing is claimed to be a big problem in Westport. The assertion comes from the director of the Buller Unemployment Centre, Mr Michael Duff, who said children as young as 10 were sniffing glue in the Westport railway yards. He said it had been going on for four years and said local shopkeepers sold

young people glue without question. Mr Duff said he knew of at least one child who was receiving medical treatment. He said some parents did not know what was going on and others did not care, but he warned that the. habit killed brain cells and could cause death. The Westport police agree that there has been a problem but said there was little

they could do, because gluesniffing is not illegal. The Westport police also believe crimes are going unreported because witnesses fear reprisals. The police could not act until the alleged offence was reported, said a spokesman. Shoplifting had been a problem in Westport recently and the police knew of at least one witness who was afraid to come forward.
