Moon to block view of planet

The planet, Saturn, will disappear from view over Christchurch for about 45 minutes on Friday.

The crescent moon will pass in front of the planet about 9.51 p.m., according to a scientific officer at the Carter Observatory, Mr Graham Blow. Saturn will take about 40 seconds to disappear completely before reappearing on the opposite side of the moon about 10.37 p.m. This happens about four times in New Zealand this year, but usually during daylight. On Friday evening the event will be visible to the naked eye, although a binocular or small telescope will improve the view. Next year, Mercury will be the only planet which will appear to pass behind the moon from New Zealand. This will be during daylight on November 14.
