Squatters trapped?
NZPA-AAP Sydney Firemen believe a number of people may have been trapped and burned to death in a fire which gutted a derelict six-storey office block in Clarence Street in inner Sydney early yesterday. They said that the building, known as Goldberg House, had been inhabited by squatters since it was set down for demolition several months ago. About 50 firemen from eight brigades took almost three hours to control the blaze, which began in the early hours of the morning
and spread to several neighbouring buildings which were extensively damaged also. Firemen were not able to enter the building immediately because of heat and danger. “We can’t be sure if there were people inside, but it is a reasonable supposition at this stage,” said a Fire Brigade spokesman, District Officer Alan Easy. The cause of the fire is not yet known but firemen suspect it may have been accidentally started by squatters inside who were trying to keep warm during a cold night.
