Youth Band to play in Chch
The National Youth Band of New Zealand will play in Christchurch next month as part of its concert tour of Australia and New Zealand. The 46 young brass players will make a street march and give a midday concert in Cathedral Square on Thursday, September 6. They will give a public concert at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre at 8 p.m. the same day. The president of the Canterbury Provincial Brass Bands’ Association, Mr Don Haggit, said the concert would range from classical and standard brass pieces to pop music.
“It will appeal to a wide range of people,” he said. The band players are all under 22. Only one-quarter of those who applied to join the band were accepted, said Mr Haggit.
“They are top-class musicians,” he said. The band spent four days in Auckland in rehearsals before leaving last week for a tour of New South Wales and Queensland. It will arrive back in New Zealand on September 5 for a tour of Christchurch, Timaru, and Dunedin. A commercial LP and cassette of the band had been recorded in Nelson, said Mr Haggit. This would be released to coincide with the tour, he said. Radio New Zealand has also recorded the band for broadcasting.
